This comment was made on my earlier post about breedings I have been doing. So today when I was running one of my pups in the grouse woods I took a couple of short videos: videos cannot be shared within a reply so I had to create this new post as my reply to RAE.
Videos of dogs in the woods are difficult to take but being an unusual, snow-free March here in northern Michigan, the pup is at least visible for short periods. This pup is 8th generation of my line but her sire was an outcross with mostly field trial bloodlines. She is 10 months old and we have been getting into grouse in our covers so she is working pretty close at this phase. As luck would have it I did not have the video running when she went on point so just snapped still photos of those but it is now my challenge to video capture her hitting scent and pointing.
These show what constitutes training for my own dogs. I am silent, I only give a whistle if she goes out past 100 yards, which for me is far enough for a puppy in the woods. She is letting me walk in front of her on point, she breaks when the bird flushes and merrily gives brief chase then comes back in to soak up the scent where it had been. The second video shows her pausing and questioning a scent of some sort but she self releases and hunts on: exactly how to learn to trust her nose and her own judgement.
RAE, you have inspired me to try to capture more video moments as the pups progress, I hope you enjoyed these. A still shot from today on a find:
She’s beautiful! Her tail just thumping. 😊 Thank you for sharing.
